at the Japanese restaurants I worked (I worked 2 chains before), both had the habit of throwing salt at the entrance when business is slow.
and true enough, will become friggin busy after we throw salt de. logically if the salt attract more 'brothers' to crowd at our entrance, even less customers will come in right?

Maybe it's the way it is being 'offered'? If based on the logic that rice repels them, then why would people place bowls of rice at altars for 'them' to 'eat'?

oic it is really opposite of wat I heard from >.< like selling salt in graveyard to become rich and the throwing of rice and salt when u encounter them so the ghost would be attracted to the rice and salt.

Maybe the salt is to feed them so they will 'help' to bring customers in. Just like going to graveyard, offer them salt and they will give you some winning numbers.

Salt is one of the most powerful of cleansing agents while rice is a food offering to wandering earth spirits to ensure harmonious coexistence.

I guess it is like telling them we are coming here in peace to live in? Even cleansing, there is a lot things to take note of >.< not just simply throwing
